Detailed Rwanda Big 5, Primates & Wildlife Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Airport Transfer
Meet with a driver for a warm welcome into the Land of a Thousand Hills- Rwanda and after, get briefed on your 10 days Rwanda safari.
After, leave the airport to check into your hotel in Kigali, have dinner and a night stay.
Day 2: Transfer to Akagera National Park
Akagera National Park safari takes you through a guided game drive for 2-3 hours or more with expectations for you to enjoy sight of big game, birds and other savanna species.
You will travel from Kigali to Akagera in the Eastern side of Rwanda about 2 and half hours’ drive in 4WD vehicle.
Lunch will be enjoyed on arrival and check in at your lodge, later, you will have Lake Ihema launch trip to view hippos, aquatic birds, crocodiles then return for overnight stay.
Day 3: Game drive & boat cruise
Akagera National Park, located in Eastern Rwanda is the only savanna park to visit for big game safaris.
Today after breakfast, set off with guide for 2-3 hours’ wildlife or game drive along the Northern game track with high possibility to see lions, buffaloes, leopards, rhinos, Masai giraffes, zebras, roan antelopes, countless avifaunal species and more.
At around 11:00am, get back to enjoy a leisurely lunch and then connect to Lake Ihema for a launch trip. On 2-3 hours’ Lake Ihema launch trip, expect great sightings such as crocodiles, hippos, aquatic birds and others.
Day 4: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
Enjoy an early breakfast and after, meet with driver for transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park in the Southern side of Rwanda. En-route possible stopover points include museum at Butare, Nyanza and launch then proceed to check in at your lodge.
Day 5: Chimpanzee Trekking & Forest Canopy Walk
Have breakfast and after, visit Uwinka for briefing about Nyungwe forest chimpanzee trekking rules and also to be assigned to a park guide.
By 8:00am, be ready to hit the forest to look for chimps for 2-4 hours and on the way, don’t miss sighting a range of other primates, birds and flora. Have lunch and after, you will set off for forest canopy walk to see various monkeys, birds and view of a beautiful forest canopy.
Day 6: Colobus Monkey Tracking
Enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and after, expect to be part of Nyungwe colobus monkey tracking. There are about 400 colobus monkeys in Nyungwe alone plus several other monkeys worth sighting on 2-4 hours’ colobus tracking.
In the evening, you may have community/coffee tour experience in the nearby extensive coffee plantation.
Day 7: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park, situated in Ruhengeri is a home to some of remaining mountain gorilla population (1063).
You will meet with driver after breakfast and then drive to Ruhengeri with en-route stopover to enjoy photo taking especially at Lake Kivu. After, get to Volcanoes NP to check in at the lodge for overnight stay.
Day 8: Gorilla trekking in Rwanda & Gorilla Guardians Village
Gorilla trekking is a major highlight of every Rwanda safari tour and this will be enjoyable starting at 8:00am after breakfast.
Allocation of gorilla families will be done during briefing and the actual trek takes 2-6 hours including one hour of close interaction.
Exit the jungles of Volcanoes NP for relaxation at the lodge and later, set off for Gorilla Guardians Village for enjoyable cultural experience.
Day 9: Golden monkey trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Have breakfast and after, you will supplement your gorilla trekking with magical golden monkeys on your 9th day of 10 days best of Rwanda safari.
Trekking to see golden monkeys may last 2-4 hours and expect amazing sights of these beautiful apes.
Day 10: Back to Kigali
Volcanoes National Park to Kigali takes about 2-3 hours’ drive and your trip begins after breakfast and check out of the lodge. Departure will be at Kigali Airport or drop off at a hotel and this marks the end of the 10 days best of Rwanda safari.
