Detailed 2 Days Mount Karisimbi Climbing Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Kigali – Karisimbi, enjoy the 1st hike to Karisimbi Volcano

Early morning, leave a hotel you spent the previous night or place of residence in Kigali and begin 2-3 hours’ short trip to Volcanoes National Park located in Musanze or Ruhengeri Northwestern Rwanda. Arrive early to be briefed about your hiking adventure through Karisimbi Volcano – the tallest of all the 8 volcanoes that make up the Virunga Massifs.

The first trek to the summits of Karisimbi starts early with park guide expected to take 6 hours and comes with breathtaking views of other volcanoes. Today’s stopover will be at altitude 3700m where you will camp for the night. While exploring the Karisimbi hiking trail to its summits, there are higher chances to encounter other attractions.

Over 200 bird species also reside in the different habitats of Volcanoes NP and they include babbling cisticola, Chubb’s cisticola, coqui francolin, Ross’s turacos, Rwenzori double collared sunbird, long tailed cisticola, red faced woodland warbler, etc.

Additionally, numerous primates such as Mona monkeys, golden monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys and more also live in the Volcanoes National Park. On a hike to Karisimbi summits, there is a higher chance of encountering some of these species and more.

Day 2: Descend from Karisimbi & departure

Leave the campsite at 3700m summits for last trek to conquer the 4507m summit and enjoy the jaw-dropping view of the surrounding and many other volcanoes.

After, descend back to Kinigi briefing point to meet your driver guide to be transferred to your respective pre-booked lodge/hotel in Kigali or drop off to Kigali International Airport for departure.

While in Kigali, you may take part in a guided Kigali city tour taking you through historical sites such as the Kigali genocide which tells the story of the 1994 Rwanda genocide.
