Detailed Rwanda Family Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Kigali to Volcanoes National Park
Meet and greet your driver-guide at the airport, in Kigali or at a mutually agreed-upon pickup location. After that, you’ll be briefed and your travel paperwork will be validated before departing for Volcanoes National Park.
The drive takes about 2-3 hours and offers breathtaking views of undulating hills, plantations and waving natives. You will arrive and check-in at the lodge for lunch, followed by an hour’s experience at Musanze caves.
Musanze caves are situated a few kilometers from the park. It is large inside, with colonies of bats and more. After the experience, you will drive back to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Gorilla trekking adventure in Volcanoes National Park
This day, wake up for an early morning breakfast at the lodge and then travel to the park headquarters with your packed lunch and luggage to join the rest of the tourists for a ranger guide briefing.
This activity will last approximately 30 minutes, following the group that you will be assigned to. Track will last for approximately 2-8 hours, depending on how far they have moved.
The search is done on foot, beginning from where the apes were last seen during the previous search and ending where they are suspected to be feeding or resting.
Before returning to the lodge, you will have up to an hour to take photos and thoroughly observe these primates.
In the evening, you can rest in the beautiful gardens or lounge reading a book or have an encounter with the local people, who will dance, sing and tell you stories till evening comes. Dinner and overnight will mark the end of this day.
Day 3: Travel east to Akagera National Park
After breakfast, you will check out of the lodge and hit the road to the eastern part of the country, where the only savannah park in Rwanda is found. It is a scenic drive, with a stopover at rewarding places, and for lunch.
You will arrive at your lodge in the evening, proceed to check-in for dinner and then a peaceful sleep.
Day 4: Game drive and boat ride on Lake Ihema
After a peaceful sleep, you will join your ranger guide for a 3-4-hours’ game drive in the savannah grassland of Akagera national park. On a lucky day, you will encounter variety of prey and predators in the wild; even those hardly seen, such as the lions, leopards and hyenas.
Other residents include elephants, Buffaloes, giraffes, rhinos, waterbucks, Oribis and more. Have Bush breakfast, as you admire the stunning landscape, thereafter return to the lodge for relaxation and Lunch.
After lunch, you will drive to Lake Ihema for a rewarding Boat cruise experience. This lake is a source of water to most of the park residents, and also during this boat ride, you get to see the aquatic residents, notably the hippos, crocodiles and the numerous birds. End the day at the lodge with dinner and overnight.
Day 5: Akagera to Nyungwe National Park
After breakfast, you will check out of the lodge for a transfer to Nyungwe National Park (a capital to over 13 unique primate species). The route to the park is marked by breathtaking landscapes, rolling hills and dotted homesteads in the countryside.
Have an enroute stopover at the King’s Palace for a cultural vibe; followed by lunch. Thereafter, proceed to Nyungwe National Park, arriving and checking in to the lodge for refreshment, dinner and overnight sleep.
Day 6: Nyungwe National Park Chimpanzee trekking and Canopy walk
After breakfast, go to the park headquarters for a rewarding pre-trekking briefing at the park headquarters. Ranger guides will explain different trekking dos and don’ts, and then guide through the forest on a tracking exercise that can last for approximately 2-5 hours.
This habitat is shared by over 13 unique primates; notably chimpanzees, monkeys, baboons and more. There are about 170 bird species, over 90 mammal species and unique plants; most of which you will be taught by the end of the tour.
Chimpanzees spend most of their day playing, feeding, resting and moving both on ground and top of tree branches of which the eyes will see, and the ears listen to the sweet melodies.
After spending an hour with these apes, you will have lunch break and then an afternoon canopy walking adventure, until sunset. Dinner and overnight at sunset.
Day 7: City tour and departure
After breakfast, check out of the lodge and depart for Kigali City. En-route, you will have lunch in Huye city and then proceed to Kigali for a city tour, visiting local markets to purchase some souvenirs as a remembrance of the trip.
