Top National Parks in Rwanda – Volcanoes, Nyungwe & Gishwati-Mukura Safaris

Rwanda is one of the best countries in Africa for primate safaris and nature adventures. It is home to beautiful mountains, rich forests, and wildlife-filled parks. The country has four main national parks that protect rare animals and offer unforgettable safari experiences.

These are Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe Forest National Park, and Gishwati-Mukura National Park. Each park offers something different for travelers who love nature, adventure, and wildlife.

Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park is the most visited park in Rwanda. It is famous for being home to the endangered mountain gorillas, offering travelers a chance to meet these gentle giants up close through gorilla trekking. The park is also a perfect destination for hiking lovers because it has five of the eight Virunga volcanoes that spread across Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The volcanoes found in the park include Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo. Each volcano provides a different hiking experience with beautiful scenery and a chance to spot unique plants and animals.

Apart from gorilla trekking, visitors can also track golden monkeys, visit the tomb of Dian Fossey, and take nature walks through the park’s bamboo forests. Volcanoes National Park remains one of the most important conservation areas in East Africa and a highlight of any trip to Rwanda.

Nyungwe Forest National Park

Nyungwe Forest National Park is located in southwestern Rwanda and is one of the oldest rainforests in Africa. It is one of the largest montane forests on the continent and a key center of biodiversity. The park is the best place in Rwanda to see chimpanzees in the wild.

Visitors can also enjoy the famous canopy walk, which is suspended 50 meters above the forest floor, offering a clear view of the trees and animals below. Nyungwe has several hiking trails where tourists can explore waterfalls, birds, butterflies, and different primates like colobus monkeys. It is a calm, green escape for anyone who loves nature walks and wildlife photography.

Gishwati-Mukura National Park

Gishwati-Mukura National Park is Rwanda’s newest park, created in 2015. It was formed by combining two small forests, Gishwati and Mukura to protect the remaining wildlife and restore the area’s natural environment. The park is home to 232 bird species, 60 tree species, and about 20 chimpanzees, along with golden monkeys and other animals.

This park plays a key role in forest conservation and gives visitors a chance to see how Rwanda has successfully restored its natural habitats. Guided walks, bird-watching, and primate tracking are some of the main activities here.

Gishwati-Mukura may be small compared to other parks, but it is full of life and an important part of Rwanda’s growing eco-tourism network.
