Detailed 4-Day Rwanda Gorilla Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival, Kigali City Tour, and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will meet your driver-guide for a short safari briefing. You will then begin your Kigali city tour to visit several interesting sites such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial, Richard Kandt Museum, Belgian Monument, and Kimironko Market.
After the tour, drive to Volcanoes National Park in the northwestern part of Rwanda. Upon arrival, check in at your lodge for dinner and rest. Depending on the time, you may take a cultural visit to the Gorilla Guardians Village or enjoy a short cycling adventure around the nearby communities.
Day 2: First Gorilla Trekking Adventure
After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for a gorilla trekking briefing. You will be assigned a gorilla family and start your trek through the forest with a park ranger.
The activity usually lasts between two and eight hours depending on where the gorillas are located. Along the way, you may also see birds and tree species. Once you find the gorillas, you will spend one full hour observing them and taking pictures (without using a flashlight).
After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch, relaxation, and dinner.
Day 3: Second Gorilla Trekking and Hike to Mount Karisimbi
After breakfast, go back to the park headquarters for your second gorilla trekking experience. This time, you will trek a different gorilla family to enjoy another close encounter with these rare primates.
After trekking, have your packed lunch and continue to the lower slopes of Mount Karisimbi for a short forest walk. You will not climb to the top but explore the foothills, enjoy views of nearby landscapes, and spot birds and animals along the way.
Return to your lodge in the evening for relaxation, dinner, and overnight.
Day 4: Return to Kigali and Departure
After breakfast, check out from your lodge and drive back to Kigali City. Depending on your flight schedule, you may visit local craft shops for souvenirs and enjoy another short Kigali tour.
