Detailed 4-Day Nyungwe Primates Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Kigali City Tour and Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
Your safari begins with a pickup from your hotel or the airport in Kigali by your driver-guide. You will start with a Kigali city tour, visiting important landmarks such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial, Kimironko Market, and local monuments.
You will also visit the Nyamirambo Women’s Group to meet local women and learn about their crafts and community projects. Afterward, stop for refreshments or lunch at a restaurant of your choice.
Then, start the journey to Nyungwe Forest National Park in the southwestern part of Rwanda. The drive takes about five hours through scenic hills and valleys. On arrival, check in at your lodge, have dinner, and rest for the night.
Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe Forest National Park
This is the main highlight of your Nyungwe Forest Primate Safari. After an early breakfast, head to Uwinka Park Headquarters for a briefing about chimpanzee trekking. You will be assigned a ranger guide and a trekking group.
The trek through the forest takes about two to six hours, depending on where the chimpanzees are located. When you find them, spend one full hour observing their behavior, taking photos, and learning about their lifestyle.
After the experience, return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. You may also choose to visit nearby communities for a cultural walk before dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Canopy Walk and Birding in Nyungwe Forest
Wake up early and go birding around the forest edges with your binoculars and camera. Nyungwe Forest is home to many bird species, and the morning melodies make this activity enjoyable.
Return to your lodge for breakfast and relaxation before heading out for a canopy walk adventure. The canopy walk is done on a suspended bridge above the forest and offers amazing views of the treetops and birds.
If you are a bird lover, this is a great chance to spot several species and take memorable photos. Return to your lodge in the evening for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 4: Return to Kigali and Departure
After breakfast, check out from your lodge and start the drive back to Kigali. On arrival, your driver will drop you off at the Kigali International Airport or your hotel, depending on your travel plans.
