Detailed 18-Day East African Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival and Kigali City Tour
On arrival at Kigali International Airport, your driver-guide will welcome you and brief you about the safari. You will then tour Kigali’s attractions, including local markets and the Genocide Memorial Site, where you will learn about Rwanda’s history. After the city tour, return to your lodge for dinner and overnight rest.
Day 2: Transfer to Nyungwe National Park
After breakfast, enjoy a scenic drive to Nyungwe National Park, home to 13 different primate species. Along the way, admire the beautiful landscapes and local life. Stop at the King’s Palace Museum to learn about Rwandan culture, then continue to your lodge for dinner and relaxation.
Day 3: Chimpanzee Trekking and Canopy Walk
After an early breakfast, drive to the park headquarters for a briefing before starting your chimpanzee trek. The walk takes 1 to 6 hours, depending on where the chimpanzees are found. Once you find them, spend an hour observing and taking photos.
After lunch, enjoy a canopy walk above the treetops for about two hours. You will see the forest, plantations, and beautiful scenery before returning to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Depart Nyungwe for Volcanoes National Park
Have breakfast and drive to Volcanoes National Park in northern Rwanda. The journey is smooth and filled with scenic views. Enjoy lunch on the way, then check in at your lodge in the afternoon and relax before dinner.
Day 5: Golden Monkey Tracking and Twin Lakes Visit
After breakfast, head to the park headquarters for a briefing and then track the playful golden monkeys. The trek may take 1 to 6 hours through the forested slopes of the Virunga Mountains. Spend an hour with the monkeys before returning for lunch.
In the afternoon, visit the Twin Lakes for canoeing, photography, and relaxation before returning to your lodge for dinner.
Day 6: Depart Volcanoes for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
After breakfast, drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, home to the endangered mountain gorillas. Cross the Rwanda–Uganda border, then stop for lunch and photos at Lake Bunyonyi, known for its 27 islands. Continue to your lodge in Bwindi for dinner and overnight.
Day 7: Gorilla Trekking and Batwa Cultural Visit
After an early breakfast, go to the park headquarters for a briefing and begin your gorilla trek. The trek may take 1 to 8 hours depending on the location of your assigned gorilla family. You will walk through forest trails, hills, and thick vegetation while spotting birds and monkeys.
Spend an hour observing the gorillas — watching the silverbacks, mothers, and infants in their natural home. After lunch, visit the Batwa community to learn about their forest lifestyle, hunting traditions, and songs. Return to the lodge for dinner and rest.
Day 8: Depart Bwindi for Queen Elizabeth National Park via Ishasha
After breakfast, drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park through the Ishasha sector, known for its tree-climbing lions. If you’re lucky, you’ll see them resting on branches. Have lunch en route and continue to your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 9: Game Drive and Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise
After breakfast, enjoy a game drive across the park’s plains to see elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, antelopes, warthogs, and giraffes. Later, go for a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel, where you will see hippos, crocodiles, and many birds before returning to your lodge for dinner.
Day 10: Depart to Nairobi, Kenya
After breakfast, drive to Entebbe International Airport, stopping at the Equator for photos and lunch. Fly to Nairobi, where a representative will meet you and transfer you to your hotel for dinner and rest.
Day 11: Drive to Lake Nakuru National Park – Birding
After breakfast, drive to Lake Nakuru National Park, famous for flamingos and other birds. Stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint for photos, then continue to the park for lunch. Spend the afternoon watching birds along the lake before heading to your lodge for dinner.
Day 12: Morning Game Drive and Transfer to Masai Mara
Enjoy an early morning game drive in Lake Nakuru to see rhinos, lions, giraffes, buffaloes, and antelopes. After lunch, drive to Masai Mara National Reserve, admiring the scenic landscape on the way. Arrive in the evening for dinner and overnight.
Day 13: Full-Day Game Drive
After breakfast, spend the day exploring Masai Mara, home to large numbers of wildlife. Look out for lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffaloes, and zebras. Have a picnic lunch in the bush, then visit the Mara River to see hippos and crocodiles before returning to your lodge for dinner.
Day 14: Depart Masai Mara for Serengeti National Park
After breakfast, drive across the border into Tanzania and continue to Serengeti National Park. Enjoy the views of rolling plains, acacia trees, and wildlife along the way. Arrive in the afternoon for lunch, check in, and relax before dinner.
Day 15: Game Drive and Relaxation
Start your day early with a game drive in the Seronera area. Look out for lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, zebras, hyenas, and many more. Enjoy breakfast in the bush, then return for lunch and an afternoon of relaxation at your lodge.
Day 16: Maasai Cultural Visit and Transfer to Ngorongoro
After breakfast, visit a Maasai village to learn about their culture, songs, dances, and traditions. You will see their homesteads and cattle and can buy handmade crafts as souvenirs. After the visit, drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for dinner and overnight.
Day 17: Morning Game Drive and Crater Hike
After breakfast, go for a game drive in Ngorongoro Crater, one of Africa’s top wildlife destinations. You may spot all the Big Five — lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and buffaloes — along with wildebeests, zebras, giraffes, and warthogs. After lunch, hike to the top of the crater for amazing views before returning to your lodge for dinner and rest.
Day 18: Departure
Enjoy breakfast, then check out and drive to the airport for your flight home. If time allows, stop at Oldupai Gorge, one of the world’s most famous archaeological sites, to see fossils of early humans.
