Detailed 3 Days Mount Kenya Hike Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi to Nanyuki, Hike to Old Moses Camp
You will be picked up from Nairobi and driven to Mount Kenya National Park. Around midday, have lunch at the lodge before heading to the briefing point for registration and preparation. You will hire porters and collect all necessary hiking gear before starting your trek with a park ranger.
The hike takes about 3 to 4 hours, passing through montane forest, bamboo, and heath zones on your way to Old Moses Camp at 3,300 meters. Along the trail, you may see elephants, buffaloes, bushbucks, and various bird species. Dinner and overnight stay at Old Moses Camp.
Day 2: Proceed the Hike to Shipton’s Hut
After breakfast, continue your hike to Shipton’s Hut at 4,236 meters. This trek takes about 7 to 8 hours, so carry enough drinking water, snacks, and a packed lunch. The route passes through Mackinder’s Valley, known for its unique alpine vegetation, including giant lobelia and groundsel.
Arrive at Shipton’s Hut in the evening and rest below the Glacier Peak, ready for the summit attempt the next morning. Dinner and overnight stay at Shipton’s Hut.
Day 3: Hike to the Summit, Descend, and Transfer Back to Nairobi
Wake up early at around 3:00 a.m. and begin your hike to Point Lenana, using headlamps to guide your way. Reach the summit by sunrise and enjoy panoramic views of Mount Kenya and, on clear days, Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. Take memorable photos at the peak before descending.
Return to Shipton’s Hut for lunch, then continue your descent to the park gate for debriefing and to return any hired equipment. Your driver will meet you for the transfer back to Nairobi, marking the end of your Mount Kenya Hike.
