3-Day Nyerere National Park Safari from Arusha

Forget about your busy schedule and escape to a place where only animals can see you. Learn about wildlife, their colors, behavior, and sounds during this 3-day Nyerere National Park safari.

Nyerere National Park was declared a national park in 2019 in honor of the late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere. It is the largest national park in Tanzania, located in the eastern part of Africa.

The park is rich in wildlife and home to Africa’s Big Five — lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffaloes. You will enjoy a variety of experiences, including game drives, guided nature walks, and wildlife photography. The park also offers scenic landscapes, warm hospitality, and a wide range of plant and animal species.

While in Tanzania, you are encouraged to try local food, follow the park rules, and enjoy every moment of your visit. Swahili is the main language spoken here, so learning a few words will make your experience even better. This safari starts and ends in Arusha, Tanzania.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arusha to Nyerere National Park – Sunset Game Drive

At the agreed pick-up point, meet our company representative who will be waiting with a placard showing your name. After clearing with immigration at the airport, your driver guide will brief you about the safari.

You will then start a scenic 4–5-hour drive to Nyerere National Park, Tanzania’s largest national park. Along the way, enjoy views of the countryside, green plantations, small towns, and hills. You will also see locals going about their daily lives and waving with excitement as you pass by.

On arrival, check in at your lodge and have lunch. In the late afternoon, around 4:00 pm, you will go for a sunset game drive. This is the best time to see animals winding down their day and predators like lions, leopards, wild dogs, and hyenas coming out to hunt. You may also spot hippos and elephants near the water.

After the game drive, return to your lodge for dinner and a peaceful overnight stay.

Day 2: Wildlife Safari Expedition

Wake up early and head out for a full-day safari, birdwatching, and photography adventure across the savannah plains of Nyerere National Park. This day offers a good chance of seeing most, if not all, of the Big Five — lions, elephants, rhinos, leopards, and buffaloes.

Other animals you may see include cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, warthogs, oribis, porcupines, vervet monkeys, hartebeests, waterbucks, wildebeests, crocodiles, hippos, and African wild dogs.

Bird lovers will enjoy spotting some of the 450 bird species found in the park, such as the African harrier hawk, African openbill, marabou stork, kori bustard, African spoonbill, grey hornbill, ostrich, secretary bird, superb starling, and vulturine guineafowl.

The first game drive ends with a delicious bush breakfast, followed by lunch. In the evening, you will head out for another game drive to look for animals and birds you may have missed earlier. Enjoy the sunset views before returning to your lodge for dinner and an overnight rest.

Day 3: Departure

After a restful night, start your day around 7:00 am with bird-watching and a guided nature walk. Your ranger guide will help you identify different plants, bird habitats, and natural features along the trail.

Return to the lodge for a late breakfast, check out, and then begin your drive back to Arusha or Kilimanjaro, depending on your drop-off point. End of Safari.
