Detailed 4-Day Bwindi & Lake Bunyonyi Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Kampala to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Meet and greet your driver guide after breakfast at your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe. Begin your 7 to 8-hour journey to southwestern Uganda through Masaka and Mbarara towns. You will have two stopovers: one at the Equator for photos and souvenir shopping, and another in Mbarara for lunch.
Continue your drive through banana plantations and the beautiful terraced hills of the Kigezi highlands. The changing landscapes of Ankole and Kigezi make this journey very scenic and enjoyable. On arrival at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, check in at your lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking and Cultural Encounter in Bwindi
After an early breakfast, depart the lodge with packed lunch or snacks and report to the park headquarters for briefing at 7:30 am. The park ranger will explain the rules and guidelines for gorilla trekking.
You will then begin your trek through the forest in search of the mountain gorillas, guided by experienced park rangers and trackers. The activity can take between 2 to 8 hours, depending on the movement of the gorillas.
Once you find them, you will spend one hour watching and photographing these gentle giants before returning to the trailhead to meet your driver guide. Head back to the lodge to rest and later in the evening take a community walk to interact with the Batwa people who live near the park. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day 3: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to Lake Bunyonyi
After breakfast, drive to Lake Bunyonyi in Kabale, the second deepest lake in Africa and a popular birding spot. The name “Bunyonyi” means “place of many small birds” in the local Kiga language.
On arrival, take a sunset canoe ride on the lake and enjoy watching different bird species, islands, and local communities along the shores. The lake has about 29 islands, each with a story to tell. Take as many photos as you wish before returning to your lodge to relax.
In the evening, go for a community and nature walk to meet the Batwa, Bakiga, and Abaheesi (blacksmith) communities and learn about their way of life. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.
Day 4: Depart Lake Bunyonyi and Drive to Kampala
After breakfast, check out from the lodge and start your journey back to Kampala through Kabale and Mbarara towns. Stop for lunch at Igongo Cultural Centre, where you can also take a short tour of the museum if time allows.
Continue to Kampala or Entebbe, arriving in the evening with wonderful memories from your time at Bwindi and Lake Bunyonyi.
